eli5: why is anesthesia not applied in these cases?

Piercings and tattoos, I mean. Wouldn’t it be easy if we just applied anesthesia? I don’t know if there’s a reason why, but I do wanna know.

*Also, why isn’t anesthesia applied for IUD insertion?

Piercers aren’t medical professionals. They aren’t licensed to administer anesthesia.
As for IUD’S, it’s about history. The majority of medical science was performed and written by men, who have no idea how painful most procedures can be on women.
If men want a vasectomy, local anesthesia is applied, but having a piece of metal inserted in a woman is not. Some drs will give anesthesia, but you have to ask beforehand, and if not, Dr. Shopping is the best bet. You can always find a women who understands. Yes, I realize that sounds sexist.. but men simply don’t understand.

*I’m sure I will get downvoted.. but even my BF tried telling me “because it’s just a bit of pressure” SMH

Like, the cost for your tattoo would probably triple or quadruple with anesthesia so thats realistically the main reason. But also, anesthesia entails risk. Its quite safe now a days, but that you can still have many different complications, many life threatening. Not worth it when tattoos really aren’t that painful for the most part

Do you mean general anesthesia where they put you to sleep? No, it would not be easier, It would me much harder and more risky. General anesthesia is a serious medical procedure. It has risks and it requires specialized doctors to safely put you under, monitor you while under, and wake you up again. This all has to take place a facility that can accommodate all the equipment. This also makes it very expensive. It would be ludicrous to undergo general anesthesia for something like a piercing or tattoo where the pain is easily tolerable.

Anesthesia stays in your system for a long time & it gets trickier each time you’re under. So if you’re getting two full sleeves you’re gonna get way too much for it to be in your system

Anesthesia can easily kill people if administered wrong. Only licensed medical professionals are allowed to use it. It probably *could* be done, but the cost would be prohibitive. But there could also be rules about it not being allowed for none medicap proceedures. As for IUDs, it is probably not done because the risks involved are not justifiable for the type of procedure.

Because anesthesia is tricky. My ex-FIL, a dentist, just stuck to things like novacaine because the training and liability insurance for doing gas anesthesia was too much. If somebody wanted to be knocked out, he would refer them to another dentist who did it.

It’s not that painful to get body art vs medical surgery And probably a ton more expensive and way more red tape than it’s worth to incorporate anaesthesia into tattoos and piercings. I have 3 tattoos and 9 piercings and never thought any of them were worth getting anaesthesia for.
