Eli5: Why is it cold getting out of the shower no matter what the outside temperature is?

Is it just evaporative cooling? Is there a way to prevent being cold?

Water wicks away body heat 25 times faster than air. While you’re in the shower, you’re showered with artificially heated water to keep you warm. When you get out of the shower, you’re transferring your body heat to the water that’s still on your body.

Along the same lines, the process of evaporation requires energy. When water evaporates on your skin, a big part of that energy comes from your body heat. That’s why sweating is so effective at cooling down your body.

It’s evaporative cooling, yes. You can reduce air flow near your body or dry off faster to avoid feeling as cold (and the temperature of the room still *matters*, it’s just not the only factor involved).

The water is hotter than the air around it, so you feel cold even though its not neccessary “cold” temperature wise.

The only way to prevent it would be to raise the air temperature to the same level as the water, but that would be incredibly uncomfortable.
