Every time I get a new phone or smart watch it always states before first use please charge your device. Looking online I can only find that it supposedly improves battery life. Why is this the case?

1) It ensures that the device actually has a functioning battery, and as a result if you have an issue it’s pretty easy to document.
2) Some batteries, because of the way their internal chemistry works, see benefits from getting a full charge, such that it can heal some damage done to the battery. At the same time, the phone sitting in a box for a long time period is something that actually does have the potential to harm the battery (from lack of use). Thus, charging it ensures that the battery is brought fully to life before you start having to rely on it.
