Just a thought I had today while biking home from work and I don’t know enough physics to answer it

Unfortunately this question isn’t appropriate for an ELI5 (although completely understandable why you’d ask it or think it might have a simple answer).
In short, the answer is not only not straight forward… Unless I’m mistaken, it has not yet to be answered in full even in the scope of a post-doctorate level physics or engineering discussion. That might be unsatisfying, but even the top kinematics minds can’t give a complete answer with respect to this question.
The best you can get here even in an extremely detailed discussion will be some contributing factors (of varying level of contribution), and open hypotheses.
