[eli5] Why is it so hard to hear the dialogue in a lot of movies and shows when everything else is so loud?

I’m constantly having to turn the volume up and down depending on the what the scene is. It’s not just me either. A lot of people I know have resorted to just turning on the closed captioning so they can hear what they’re saying. I don’t remember this being an issue before.

My partner is hard of hearing and we struggle with this all the time. I’ve spent thousands on ‘sound systems’ and they all seem to give ‘sound effects’ and – basically – anything but dialog – priority. I’ve also bought special sound systems aimed at the hard of hearing, supposedly giving priority to dialog, but they haven’t worked either. It’s a real problem.

We have resorted to closed captions, which – once you get used to them – are a bit addictive, because they give you ‘everything’ – every word, and often, a lot of extra info (“Beethoven’s 5th playing in the background”).
