eli5: Why is it that 10 years ago when a (at least avg for its time) camera took a photo of a computer, or TV screen it would have weird lighting issues in the photo making the screen extremely bright and difficult to see the text but now even cheap phones take pictures of screens just fine?

The problem hasn’t gone away entirely.

I’ve owned a few smartphones from different brands over the years, and EVERY time I attempt to take a photo of something on my (plasma) TV, I get weird lighting bars, issues, colour gradients. Every single time, without exception.

EDIT: I just had to take a pic of a YouTube video about megasauropods. AND I HAD NO COLOUR ISSUES. *First* time. Right after I made this comment.
