eli5: Why is it that when people stand up too quickly they only see black dots for a few seconds?

There’s a number of things that can cause that.

Floaters for example, can get stirred up when changing aspect perhaps you’re seeing those.

If it’s defined black dots it can be blood in your eye, which could have a myriad of causes.

You could also have pre-diabetes so should probably have your blood sugar checked.

Not everyone has that.

In addition, if you’re seeing stars, you could be having a large pressure shift in your body due to a heart issue like AFib or a left ventricular issue.

It means you have low blood pressure. I have it too, especially when on my period.

I presume just not enough blood reaching your brain for a few seconds.

The pressure needed for blood to reach your brain is higher when standing than it is when laying down. Your body is constantly regulating blood pressure, but if you stand up quickly it doesn’t have enough time to respond si your brain is depraved of oxygen for a few seconds leading it to start slowing down. One result of this is the tunnel vision you refer to.
