Eli5 Why is radioactive waste a problem?

Why can’t we dump it into a volcano or yeet it into space? Or for that matter, if it’s still radioactive, doesn’t that mean there is still more juice we could squeeze out of it?

The short answer? It’s not as big a problem as people seem to think it is. If it was left to run free and contaminate groundwater, that would be a huge problem. But it’s not, and our current ways of reusing, decontamination and storage are more than adequate.

[This](https://youtu.be/4aUODXeAM-k) video from Kyle Hill explains it really well.

As for sending it to space? Really, really expensive. And putting it in a volcano would likely create clouds of radioactive dust.
