CSB: Back in the 1970s, my mom came from India to visit her sister in the Midwest. She had unknowingly been infected with malaria just before leaving, I guess, because a few days after she landed, she started getting the classic symptoms: a spiking fever with shivering, and periods of lower temperatures.
My uncle was a doctor, so he took her along to the local county hospital (a teaching hospital), where she caused a sensation – no one had actually seen a case of malaria for decades. She became immensely popular, as every resident brought along their interns to examine her, and her blood samples made the rounds.
A quick course of quinine cleared it up, of course, so all was well.
