Eli5 Why is there Static in online calls?

When I am in a Google meet call alone, or when everyone else is in mute, I hear a static. Why does this happens during online calls?

It could be on your end, but some providers/applicatioms add static so you feel more comfortable. If there is zero noise on the line a lot of people have the feeling that the call ended or disconnected and feel uncomfortable.

It is technically not necessary.
