eli5: Why melting glaciers are existential problem to humanity? or are they?

Glaciers formed in areas that are reliably cold enough for them to have formed and stayed as glaciers for a long time. If they’re melting it’s because those reliably cold enough places aren’t reliably cold enough anymore, which signals a shift in the Earth’s climate as a whole.
