Eli5: Why on most dishwashers is the ECO mode multiple hours long. Wouldn’t that use more power??

Most of the energy use in a dishwasher is heating the water, not pumping it.

Eco mode works by heating a smaller amount of water to a lower temperature, but gets the same cleaning by pumping that water round more times.

So, it definitely uses less energy.
