Eli5 why should I leave conditioner on for 3-5 minutes before rinsing?

The directions on conditioner always says to leave it on for some amount of time before rinsing. I understand that conditioner coats the hair shaft making it easier to detangle etc., what is the advantage of leaving it on longer than it takes to comb through?

Hair is a protein tube. There’s space for the conditioner to fill up and work with deeper in the tube than just the surface and it takes some time for the conditioner to soak into/through the tube.
