eli5 Why some websites that host insane amounts of pirated content are well known (have Wikipedia articles etc) yet don’t get taken down.

Wikipedia licenses most of its content under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License.
What that basically means is that you are free to reproduce their content as long as you give credit to Wikipedia as the source (the attribution part of the license) and you have to allow others to use your modified content too (the share alike part of the license).
