All of the Xboxes have basically just been PCs in fancy boxes running unique software. They were all built to work like PCs work, and they all used DirectX for the renderer. They’re all literally just direct upgrades of each other – playing an original Xbox game on an Xbox Series is sort of like playing a PC game from 1997 on a modern laptop. It may need some minor tweaks, but it’ll mostly just work!

All of the PlayStations have been unique. Unique bespoke hardware, unusual configurations – they don’t resemble each other hardware-wise at all. Games built for one PlayStation just won’t run on a different one without using an emulator.
