eli5 why there are holes in forest St. Helen

Why are there, southeast from Mount St. Helens, what appears to be ‘holes’ in the forest? They are equally spaced with each a single tree in the middle.

You are probably seeing the results of logging and leaving seed trees. The area is clear cut, and then one good tree is left to spread seeds to regrow the area.
