It’s called color temperature. The warmer tones in orange and yellow range are more like candlelight and considered cozier/homier so those are good for living room and bedrooms. A more neutral white light is better in kitchens and bathrooms. There are also very bright, almost blue lights that are very harsh and mostly useful in a place like a gymnasium or warehouse.
The orange lamps are called *sodium-vapor lamps* because to produce light, electricity is pumped through a chamber filled with sodium vapor. This excites the atoms, and when they “cool off” from being excited, they give off orange light.
The white lights are either mercury-vapor (same concept, just using mercury) or LED.
