Great question. Basically, because it explained a lot. The ‘quality’ of a scientific theory is measured by how much it correlates with observation and its simplicity. Once the equivalence of matter and energy, in this simplest relationship became obvious, much of our understanding of the way things work started to fit together. A simple, profound equation, all of a sudden could tie everything together and could explain any physical system to which it might be applied. Very cool.
