Eli5: Why were the Boeing Max 9 planes immediately grounded but not the Max 8’s?

I don’t understand why regulators immediately grounded the Max 9’s, but it took two Max 8 crashes before they were grounded.

Pretty much, at this point we are more keen to think there is something wrong vs just pilot error. With MAX 8 Boeing was very equipment k to point to pilot error and we bought it until it was clear it was a product issue

With this one, there is no way for it to be anything other than a Mx issue or a product issue. In either case grounding for inspection would be required. With the Max 8 pilot error can be assumed as an isolated incident and everyone can just act like nothing happened
