ElI5:How did people know that stars are like the sun and that the sun is like them?

I have been searching for a good ten minutes and I found no post that had the same question I had
spectroscopy! you can see what something is made of based on the light it emits. so if you measure the spectra of a star and our sun then compare them you can see that they have very similar elemental compositions 🙂
