A photon of light hits a special sheet, knocking an electron free. That sheet is at a high voltage and the electron quickly zooms through a series of very *very* small tubes where they knock more and more electrons free, all picking up energy as they fly from the high voltage. At the end of the tubes is another sheet, which produces light when it gets hit by fastmoving electrons.
So one photon -> one electron -> many electrons -> many photons. This turns a dim light into a bright one.
