[eli5]how do trains get delayed when they are traveling and how do they catch up

Reason I’m asking this is cause I’m heading home today and checking the Train app for when and where the platform is for getting off (and the connecting train too) between the final stop and the stop prior it gained an extra minute of delays, but in the same vein one noticed twins gain the times back

The extra minute was surely because at the last station there were too many people and getting in and out the train needed more time than calculated.
A little delay isn’t something bad because the train can go most of the time a little bit faster (like 5 to 10 omg more than normal).

None of the things above are valid for when you use a train in Germany, because then, just pray to what ever entity you want so you reach your destination on the same Day
