[ELI5]Why do some perfectly fine places just…get abandoned?

379 viewsOther

I occasionally come across YouTube short videos/tiktoks that are about urban exploring. And sometimes said videos are about what happens after a location gets leaked. The pre-leak version genuinely looks amazing and all and I was wondering if these kids are fake. If not then why do people abandon these places?

There are costs to living somewhere even if you own it, like taxes, maintenance, and mortgages. Sometimes it’s cheaper to just walk away and hope someone else deals with those costs instead.

I’ve seen this firsthand. The family of a childhood friend of mine abandoned their house after a divorce. It just cost too much to stay in it and nobody wanted to buy it. It was cheaper to just say “someone else take care of this” than it was to try to continue to live in it and pay upkeep costs. IIRC the government eventually took ownership of the land and house and auctioned it off.
