From a biological point of view, happiness and sadness are the results of our brains in-built rewards systems. As we do things that our brains evolved to see as good, chemicals get released that your brain interprets as happy. Lack of those reward chemicals makes your brain sad.
This is the reason that AI neural networks and machine learning use a reward system as part of it’s training algorithm, so that it mimics our own evolution and drive.
