explain the scam to sellers by buyers sending emails to ads saying “i want to buy your whatever, contact me on email.address.scam”

I recently placed an ad for a friend and received a few of these type messages even though the contact phone number of the seller was listed on the ad, I smelled a scam and just replied thru the ad site telling potential scammer to call the number on the ad and speak to the seller. What am I missing? Is this like a gullibility test, ie if you email they have your email address and basically have you “on the hook”

You mean scammers who offer to buy your stuff? They usually come up with some bullshit charge or money they need before they can buy what your selling, with a promise that you’ll get the money back later.

Once you send the money, you’ll never hear from them again.

My bet is etransfer scam, they sent you $1000 for a $500 item and claim as a mistake and ask for you to send $500 back, but the original money is from a compromised account and gets pulled back but you sent the $500 and they get that free and clear

and they probably don’t want to call since they run the scam through email and etransfer they’ll never show up with cash and probably aren’t even in the same country as you

I’ve had the start of this though email when selling things, its kind of obvious when someone asked to buy stuff and then sends you 4 paragraphs about how they’re moving and have some deposit account and they’ll send the mover but they need to do x and y first, really soon as I saw 4 paragraphs of text I knew it was a scam and just insisted on cash
