explain the scam to sellers by buyers sending emails to ads saying “i want to buy your whatever, contact me on email.address.scam”

I recently placed an ad for a friend and received a few of these type messages even though the contact phone number of the seller was listed on the ad, I smelled a scam and just replied thru the ad site telling potential scammer to call the number on the ad and speak to the seller. What am I missing? Is this like a gullibility test, ie if you email they have your email address and basically have you “on the hook”

You mean scammers who offer to buy your stuff? They usually come up with some bullshit charge or money they need before they can buy what your selling, with a promise that you’ll get the money back later.

Once you send the money, you’ll never hear from them again.
