Fuckin’ nasal mucus

So mucus is to stop you from digesting your own stomach, right? So why does it come out of your nose? Also what is the scientific word for a “bogie/booger”?

You’re basically one long tube. Mouth to anus, you need something to lubricate the tube. That lubricant is called mucus, or mucin. Without it you would die.

The reason you have it in your nose is to keep you alive. It protects your lungs. It keeps your lungs from drying out, keeps them able to expand with every breath. Premature babies who haven’t developed the mucus lining of their lungs die, because they cannot breathe. You also need it to smell things.

It also keeps viruses and bacteria out of your lungs. That mucus is your primary defence against Covid. You have little hairs called cilia that wave in time to push the mucus up and out, away from your lungs. Most viruses that get in get trapped in your mucus and swept away before they can harm you.

There are a billion other uses your body has for nose mucus, but those are probably the big two.

*Also. Mucus is also to stop your stomach to stop it from digesting the wall. Mucus is a pretty broad term. It’s also to keep your nose and throat wet so dry things don’t scratch and damage your nose and throat. It also helps you pass out stool and lubricates the vagina during sex.
