Grand Slams

I was watching a Roger Federer interview and I was wondering how he has 20 grand slams. He hasn’t won 20 Wimbledon/French opens….

By definition, isn’t a grand slam winning all 4 major games (Wimbledon, French Open, US open and Australian open)?

I googled the answer and I’m not sure how this works for tennis. I don’t watch tennis regularly or even understand it, but Roger was a delight to cheer for and I went down the interview rabbit hole.

It is kind of a confusing terminology. A grand slam tournament is, as you say, one of the 4 major tournaments. To win a “grand slam” is to win all 4 within the same year (although there is a version of “grand slam” that means winning 4 consecutive grand slam tournaments – ie within a “year”)

But winning one of the majors is also referred to as winning a grand slam TOURNAMENT, which is what Federer’s record is referring to. He has won the majors 20 times in his career.
