How and why did dogs evolve to be so loyal and affectionate to humans?

I would just like to understand why my dog seems to see me as her person and not another animal she must fight or escape from.

Mindhazard ahead, don’t read if you don’t want dogs to be ruined

First, dogs are basically wolves stuck in adolescence their entire lives. People who get wolves or wolf-dog hybrids often report that it acts like a dog for the first 2-3 years, then goes feral.

Second dogs can’t get food without human aid. We bred them to do things which we need, which are not good for getting food. Even hunting dogs are made for hunting *with* humans. Your dog’s survival instincts are attuned to the fact that it’s a hostage to your whims and it must suck up to you relentlessly and show absolute loyalty to get fed.

So, uh. The answer is Stockholm syndrome.

A combination of hunger and submissive traits. They don’t love you as much as they seem to. They are playing you. They were bred that way.
