how and why does sleep deprivation cause eye bags?

The eye bags has more to do with moisture and blood flow since the skin there is very thin. Moisture can leak into the eye and blood vessels dilate with lack of sleep. This happens when you don’t get enough restorative sleep at night. This causes an increase in blood flow, and since the skin under your eyes is thinner, the dark tint caused by the increased volume of blood is more noticeable here. Same thing with moisture only in that case it’s clearer fluid so it just gives a puffy appearance

Genetics, allergies and smoking causes dark circles. Sleep deprived dark eye disappears after a few hours rest, the others don’t ever.

Interestingly, I’ve noticed several times that my “permanent” dark eye circles disappear after surgery involving anesthesia and IV. Any theories?

Basically, they’re bruises caused by your body not being able to repair itself efficiently

The skin under the eyes is pretty thin, and the blood vessels there are pretty dainty because of that. This means those blood vessels tend to get pretty damaged just with regular use.

Normally, your body would be able to repair them well enough to keep up with damage. But sleep deprivation impairs your body’s ability to repair itself, so the blood vessels in your eyelids don’t get repaired as well as normal.

The vessels eventually start to swell so they can try and get more blood flow in the area to fix the issue. This extra blood pools underneath the skin, creating a purple colour (this is what we call “bruising”)

You rub your eyes more when you get tired and this puts pressure on the small capillaries in that area. Do it enough times and you’re basically giving yourself a black eye.
