This is just anecdotal but my babies started by just bouncing. It doesnt require any skill at all. Just moving to the beat.

Then sometimes they copy what I do. I do damce around a lot while I do house work and I do see that they lift their arms when I lift my arms etc.

From there, its just adding moves to your dance move repertoire.

Certain types of birds that tend to bounce up and down to music, will do so even if taken as a baby into a rehabilitation center where none of the staff are ever dancing. They do also just do that when they are excited but I guess that would be similar to babies bouncing up and down in response to seeing something like ice cream.

It’s a reaction. Depending on your wiring and upbringing, you’ll like certain types of music more than others , even as a baby or toddler and it’s just a reaction to it. You feel the music and you express your satisfaction in hearing it through dancing . You just let loose and dance man, that’s how it is.

[Parrots move rhythmically to music sometimes.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exIYiwbyJU4)

The most likely reason is that both parrots and babies are imitating humans, who also dance to the music.

My oldest was just about 6 maybe 7 months old when she started to sway back and forth to music, bobbing her head and such. She would do this often enough that I nick named her Boogie Bear.

There’s a really cool show on Netflix about babies and I think they do a study over this on one of the episodes.. it’s literally just called “Babies” it’s a really interesting watch!

Generally speaking, they’re responding to rhythmic sounds. They don’t have the sophistication of musical taste, so any discernible beat will excite them on a carnal level, and the only responses available to them are non-verbal vocalizations (some babies laugh or make sounds) and movement.

Their body just moves to it, sometimes music just makes you move, not actual dance moves but just move
