I always wondered how these patches of nothing just pop up in space

The real answer: we don’t *actually* know. Scientists have a lot of guesses, but everything is too big and far away to test.

The best guess we have: gravity. Matter likes other bits of matter, so things tend to clump together. As things grow closer, the spaces between where they were grow bigger.

Also: the universe is really, REALLY big, and there just isn’t enough matter to fill it all.
