How are “jumbo” sunflower seeds made?

Been eating sunflower seeds since I was a kid and now I am seeing more brands selling “jumbo” sunflower seeds. Is there a way to genetically modify sunflowers to grow larger seeds? Is it the shell that’s larger or the actual seed?

It could be either, and you wouldn’t need to genetically modify the plants. Ignoring the taboo around GMOs, we’ve been selectively breeding plants to reduce the size of their seeds for decades, maybe centuries at this point. Watermelons, bananas, grapes: They all used to have large seeds, but now you can easily buy seedless varieties. It wouldn’t be very hard to do the same, just in reverse: Plant the largest seeds, and eventually the average will go up
