I’ve always wondered how field maintainers manage to get perfect patterns in the turf of football pitches… do they do that by sowing, mowing, fertilizing,…?

Yknow those sequin fabrics that you sometimes see on women’s clothing and everything for sale at Claire’s?

The two sides of the sequin catch the light in different ways when you run your hand across them. That’s essentially what’s happening to the grass.

When the mower goes over the lawn, there’s a little brush on the end that flattens the blades of grass down. When the mower comes back in the other direction, the blades get flattened the other way. Do this enough and you get stripes, do it perpendicularly and you get squares.
