Sleepwalker and lucid dreamer here. So I can actually tell you the transition as well, remembering both the dream and waking moments.
Our brains release a chemical when we sleep that paralyzes our bodies from acting out our dreams. Obviously this doesn’t work in some people. Sleepwalking in children is way more common than it is in adults, couldn’t tell you the exact science there.
So, when that chemical fails, you’ll get people in various types of activity.
Some people who mostly only end up with their eyes open tend to experience “night terrors” or sleep paralysis. My experience here (I don’t have night terrors but have felt the building fear), is eventually your eyes will pick up *something* that triggers your brain to “add it in” to your dream sequence. A lot of times the fear happens because you’re trying to figure out why you’re seeing something in your dream that suddenly doesn’t make sense. It wasn’t on that “planned” ride your brain was taking you on. The part where people see darkness, creatures without a solid form, inky blackness, general obscure imagery is because that’s what you see when your brain wakes up and your eyes are already open. Reality kind of *melts* in to view over your dream before your vision focuses and you are aware enough to comprehend your surroundings. You can’t *move* (for people with night terrors) because the chemical your brain releases to keep you from acting out your dreams is still mostly doing its job. Not because there’s some evil force holding you there. Your sleeping conscious is just trying to reason with “why” it can’t move. Your brain, by default, isn’t likely popping out logical science at this time so….demons it is.
