So to understand this, you first have to understand that our consciousness and what we perceive as reality is actually slightly delayed, around 80 milliseconds. What that means is that everything we do is actually being done by our subconscious and what we experience is just everything as it’s being written to memory. You can think of it a DVR in our brains. The conscious mind provides oversight and direction for the actions the subconscious performs.
In sleepwalking, the conscious mind is mostly inactive, it’s not watching the DVR feed. The subconscious is going about its “normal” routine, it just isn’t getting the feedback from the conscious mind to keep it in check.
