The gas and dust in the nebula are made up of elements such as hydrogen and helium, which were created in the Big Bang. As the cloud collapses, it begins to spin faster and faster and the temperature and pressure in the center of the cloud increase. This causes the gas and dust to heat up and eventually form a protostar. As the protostar continues to collapse, the temperature and pressure in its core increase even more, causing nuclear fusion to occur. This is what makes a star shine.
