How can a sundial reliably work when the sun’s position in the sky changes from day to day and month to month with days getting longer/shorter, etc?

You can get sundials with either the months marked in some way, or very fancy ones with a wiggly shape to compensate.

But nobody is using sundials for precise time measurements. They’re for a rough idea of what hour it is. They only work with clear skies, for starters.
