How can a video game console run a high end game but cost way less than a good computer which does the same?

Most video game consoles sell for around 500-600 dollars and can run very high performance games like God of War and Red Dead Redemption 2 while also being able to access the internet.

But if you want a computer that can do the same, it tends to cost way more, like above 2000 dollars. The processor or graphics card components alone can cost more than an entire console.

Why? If it seems like they have the same things in terms of hardware, why are the prices so different?

Consoles only have to do a few specialised tasks, with standardised hardware and software. This reduces complexity and cost.

PCs have to do a huge variety of tasks, and can have a wide range of hardware and software from basic to ridiculous, and little of it mass produced. Makes everything more complex and expensive

What everyone is saying is valid, but it’s also worth mentioning that the companies that produce the PC components are selling them at an insanely high mark-up.
NVIDIA is guilty of manipulating the supply of their graphics cards. That and they almost have a monopoly on the market with AMD being their only real competitor.

A computer can do many many other things and must be optimized as such, but consoles have practically a sole purpose of gaming.

Frame rate and resolution. Some people say there is no difference between 1080P @ 30FPS, and 4k @ 60FPS. I say those people are blind, deaf, and dumb. Its like watching a VHS from the 80’s next to a Blu Ray disc in the 2010’s. There is a monumental difference.
