FWIW, I have 10 year old identical twins and my OB was convinced they were fraternal (with a fused placenta) while the high risk specialist I was seeing was convinced they were identical. I did a cheek swab test on them when they were born and they’re identical.

I have identical twins and they knew because of something they referred to as mono- di pregnancy , it means one placenta two sacs ( babies) . Only identicals will share one placenta. There are di/ di identical twins but you just have to wait until they get here to see.

You find out by the way they share the womb. Some can share a placenta, some can be in their own amniotic sac, if they’re the same gender and they have their own placentas, they can still be identical too

I have identical twins. Essentially, it has to do with the lining between the sacs as well as the placenta. Apparently in order to have identical twins, the fertilized egg has to split at the exact and most perfect moment. In addition to that, identical twins have to share one placenta. There are other factors involved (age and race usually), but that’s the easiest way to explain it.

Mother of identical twins here. They were born with completely separate placentas and sacs, and we had been told they were fraternal by the ultrasound tech. It wasn’t until they were tested when they were 10 yrs old that it was proven they were identical.

With a single baby, the ultrasound comes back in mono. With identical twins, it comes back in stereo.
