Flies don’t need a huge gap to be able to crawl into. If the gap is big enough for air to escape to signal them of rotting food to feed their babies, it’s probably big enough for them to squeeze in and lay their eggs. Reproduction is their main concern, not caring if they can make it back out- they may not need to.
