– How can my iPhone display a video in 4K if my screen resolution doesn’t have 4K pixels horizontally?

I understand that screen resolution is the number of pixels measured horizontally and vertically. Then the size of the screen is used to calculate the PPI. But if my screen resolution is only 2796×1920, how would I be able to view any video in 4K?

Imagine you have a 1-liter bottle of water and you pour it into a 200-ml cup, what happens? The cup holds what it can (200 ml), and the rest goes to waste (800 ml).

It receives the video content in 4K then reduces the resolution to fit the screen.

There actually is a difference between doing that, and simply setting your resolution to your screen resolution. If you do the latter, then the phone receives the video content as converted by the video provider, then displays it on the screen. This means (1) since the resolution conversion is being done at a different point, the end result may look slightly different, but also (2) if your phone is downloading in 4k it is using more data and/or more bandwidth.
