You really can’t. And also the caste markers often tend to vary by state and region as does the intricacies of the caste system. On the whole, a poor Indian may usually be assumed to belong to one of the lower castes, especially certain professions but even that is not a given since so much of India is poor and you will often find upper castes performing manual labour as well. Surnames and village names and records of parents etc are usually used. Also while the upper and middle classes are dominated by upper castes that doesn’t mean that all upper castes are well off or that all lower castes are poor or lower class. I know I’ve probably caused more confusion but it is in reality an irrational and discriminatory system and like others of that ilk, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to those outside.

you can lie but if you your caste has reservation privileges (in education, job, promotion etc) then why would you lie?

also people who want to avail the reservation needs to produce govt issued caste certificates.

Last name and profession (eg the apparent lowest castes are treated horribly and do the shittiest of manual scavenging jobs) is the indicator always. Rest of all of this class and caste, language, accent etc comparison indicators mean nothing. It is not how people are interpreting it on here. Class and caste are distinct and different here in India. Eg you could be an upper caste beggar but you caste status will be higher than a well educated lower caste high ranking official. Last names are key here, people know in an instant with them, its one of indias biggest shame as a culture

Probably the same ways british people tell which class someone is.

Your accent, the words you use, the clothes and jewellery you wear, the condition of your hair/teeth/skin, the things you know, the people you know, the car you drive, your manners….

It’s like asking how americans can tell someone’s class or region. It’s an educated guess, and you’ll be correct maybe 80% of the time, but 20% is a really large amount to be wrong about.

Same way you tell in any country. Speech patterns and vocabulary use is a big first one. Then how they dress can be telling. You can ask them how they spend their time, are they working a lot or do they have a business, own real estate, etc. Do they go on vacations? How do they spend them?

hmm man it depends which part of the India you are talking about most of the south got rid of family names which directly give out the caste but northies love caste so they haven’t its that simple. North overly conservative without the foresight and all they need is mandir they don’t need food they don’t need roads , they don’t need education remember these words aren’t mine they are from a northie.

one more thing most Indians are kinda inbred they marry among the same caste its been going on from the past 2000 years maybe, now the weird or good genes express themselves and there are thousands of castes some old people can literally say who is from which caste. Few people just ask how much property you got the top caste usually have above 20 acres of land while the lowest of castes got 2 or 5 acre max

In the end you can lie about your caste, lie about your religion most people don’t really care in south unless it’s a marriage aaah people aren’t giving a fuck about that one too now what everyone is looking is whether the groom is good looking or not and can he take care of their daughter well or not and does he have a good job if he meets all the criteria then the marriage is made in heaven. I don’t know about north they are a different breed man. All they do is shit on South Indians on 4chan with a vpn on. It seems there are few in the comment section too lol I can already see they going crazy in here, downvoting and talking about other countries problem, smartly diverging the very question aah whatever in the end if you are smart and from lower caste you would just lie. I’ll see you northies on 4chan and 8kun(indian chan) lets meet there lol this time without the VPNs

Truth is the last names or surnames generally give a good hint about the caste.

For example –

Brahmin -Sharma,
Brahmin -Trivedi,
Brahmin -Vyas,
Brahmin -Pandit,
Kshatriya -Thakker,
Kshatriya -Rajput,
Kshatriya -Singh,
Kshatriya -Thakor,
Kshatriya -Verma,
Vaisya -Gupta,

There’s a movie you could watch, it’s probably the only movie based around this topic: “Article 15”, I’m not sure if there’s English dub or sub.

I think this probably isn’t true but I had a sociology professor who claimed that there is a racial component to the caste system and the lower castes tended to have darker skin.
