How can phones recognise your face in the dark?

Title says it all reallly. Had to authenticate something on my phone and it was able to use facial recognition in the dark with minimal light. How does the phone do this?

Infrared light.

Your eyes can’t see infrared light, though, so you don’t notice that it has a flash on the front that shines infrared light on your face in the dark.
