As far as we know, spacetime could have existed before and the Big Bang could involve the spurt into being of only energy/matter. But that’s the point: we don’t know. It would also be a bit odd, since our observation about the expansion of the universe take in consideration the fact that new space is being created between celestial objects, so there must’ve been a time when space was more condensed. It’s just more convenient and rational to put the starting point of spacetime at the same point of energy, since before that point there was nothing to measure.
