How come dogs can see yellow and blue but not green?

You can see colors because there are cells in your eye that respond differently to different colors of light. People with normal color vision have three kinds of cells that are each most sensitive to a particular color. All the colors you see are a combination of how strongly these cells are responding to the light they are receiving. These human cells are sensitive to red light, green light, and blue light. Dogs only have two kinds of cells instead of three kinds, and these cells are sensitive to blue light and yellow light, so that’s all they can see: shades of blue, shades of yellow, and of course shades of gray.
