short answer: your gums aren’t SUPPOSED to bleed, and flossing helps correct the problems that cause the bleeding.

the bleeding is basically gum disease caused by bacterial plaque build up, which caused inflammation and swelling. when pressure is applied, it seeps blood. A major cause of this is food stuck between teeth. flossing gets rid of the food supply and clears the plaque away, so the swelling goes down and you stop getting bleeding.
