Okay so I find these things super cool and I am glad you asked.

An RFID tag is an antenna for a unique signal but that is it! There is no power source or transmitting device. All the components of the system that actually do something are within the reader. A reader could be the detectors you walk past to exit a store or the access device by a locked door.

The reader emits a signal just strong enough to give that tiny antenna in the tag enough power to respond with its own unique signal, which the reader detects and can check against its database to set off that theft alarm or open the door, whatever it is made to do.
