how come soft drink companies have their own people set up displays in supermarkets and gas stations, instead of the workers having to put it out like the other products?

Lotta bribery going on. I worked for Pepsi and Herr’s. We’d stock our own product and set up displays.
The displays varied by store as the decision was up to the manager and general manager. We’d have to make promises, concessions and offer “gifts” in order to get the displays (which was more than our alloted size).
We’d “donate” products to management and such for instore parties, usually shit like a cheap BBQ grill, basketball goal, or our own product as a write off. It would be used as giveaways for the store, to employees or pocketed by management
