Your eyes work by firing tiny chemical loads that get triggered by being hit with their correct coloured light.
If you close your eyes the red ones are still being fired when light shines through your eyelids. The blue ones build up without being triggered. So when your eyes open the blue ones are more sensitive for a moment
It’s the same as these negative images that make a greyscale pic seem coloured
Your eyes process all colors based on a balance of three types of light – red, green, and blue. White light, and all colors of light that you can see, are made from a combination of these three. There are special cells in your eyes that react to each of those colors, and from those three, your brain can make all the colors you can imagine.
If you’ve been sleeping in a lit room (such as you might if you nap in the daytime), the light has been filtering through your eyelid’s blood vessels. You may have been asleep, but the cells in your eyes that process the color “red” have been quietly working the whole time. You simply didn’t notice because you were asleep.
By the time you wake up and open your eyes, the green and blue-processing cells will be refreshed and ready to go, but your red-processing cells will be tired.
As a result, green and blue light will look brighter to you. But don’t worry, your red-processing cells will be fine! Your eyes make up for different light conditions all the time.
